Teaching for Mastery at Secondary

Secondary Mastery Specialist Programme

Applications are now being accepted for those interested in becoming a Secondary Mastery Specialist during 2020/21.  Click here for more information and an application form.  Closing date is 5pm on Wed 22 April.

Work Groups (Mastery Advocates)

Participating in the Work Group provides an opportunity for your school to engage in high-quality, sustained, collaborative professional development and participate in an important national project. The aim of these groups is to support participating teachers in developing teaching for mastery in their own classroom and across their department and to support the setting up of Teacher Research Groups (TRGs) in the participant schools. (Teacher Research Groups will comprise several or all members of the mathematics department and will typically explore aspects of pedagogy to determine what works well for them). Each Secondary school who wants to introduce and embed teaching for mastery can nominate two teachers (Mastery Advocates) to join a Work Group. You will be part of a locally-based group of teachers who meet regularly to develop professional knowledge and expertise, as well as receiving bespoke support.
In a Teaching for Mastery Work Group you will:

  • collaborate with colleagues from other local schools to share best practice
  • get individual school support and guidance from a local leader of maths education
  • take away ideas to help your students become more confident mathematicians, ready to tackle GCSEs and A levels
  • introduce and embed teaching for mastery in your classroom and department

Applications for 2019/20 are now closed.  However applications for 2020/21 will be open in due course so please sign up to our database for the latest updates.
